Oh dear, its impressive when a production can suck all the magic out of a fantasy story.
I know very little of the original material, but what I gather from the film is that there are four nations of wizard-like nomads, each blessed with an understanding of each element: earth, air, fire and water. But when the Fire Nation wages war on the others, it is up to a mystical, forgotten deity known as the Avatar who controls all four elements, to save the warring nations.
The crippling, fatal flaw with The Last Airbender is the pacing and the editing; everything happens way too fast. Scenes only last a minute or two before cutting away, making every character and moment feel forced, contrived and ultimately unnecessary. Nothing felt important.
Through this I didn't feel anything for the characters, nor did I understand the magic or lore involved; these were merely taken for granted, and I found myself asking more questions than I was receiving answers.
Not helped either by dormant performances, the most tacked on romance I've ever seen, and unremarkable action sequences that glorify the effects rather than the urgency of the story.
The only up side to this are the special effects, which boast impressive particle animation for fire and water.
I felt lost and disinterested watching it, I suppose fans of the material might enjoy it for the budget spent on costumes and effects. Pretty tedious.
